I used to kid that the Tea Partiers would complain about mandatory use of sewer systems for excrement.

Now I’m beginning to wonder if they might do that.

We had Tea Party protests in Metro Atlanta when one of our county governments, Gwinnett, did the same thing. Dividing the county into five districts and having the haulers bid for the exclusive contact to pickup garbage in one of the districts saved 75% of the residents money. Since the county collects the fees along with the property taxes the Tea Partiers claimed it was a tax increase.

The biggest gain was that property owners can’t opt out of the plan. Most landlords left it up to the renters to sign up and pay for garbage collection under the old system. Many didn’t and it caused problems with excessive amounts of garbage piling up on certain properties.

Also my area had private companies picking up trash, garbage or recyclables every day of the week. The new system has one company coming on one day a week.

Here in Lubbock (scarcely a hotbed of socialist agitation), we have a dual private/public trash system. The city sanitation department makes a given number of runs through the whole city, picking up their standard publicly owned dumpsters. The volume and frequency of this is adequate for most residential users. Those who require a higher volume or greater frequency, including most businesses, can pay extra for more city service, or they can contract with one of several privately owned companies to provide trash service. In theory, the low volume (residential) users could also hire a contractor but the private company’s rates cannot compete with the city at low volumes because they don’t normally make a large number of pickups in a given area.
The system works quite well.
